In terms of liqueurs and shochu, the distillery never had any difficulties in selling its products. In the meantime, the company has made a name for itself again on the whisky market. In 2011, Hombo Shuzo ventured a new start in whisky. Due to a lack of demand, whisky production was discontinued in 1992. Initially, whisky was only produced in winter and the rest of the year was used to produce other spirits. The distillery is located in the small village of Miyada high up in the Japanese Alps in Nagano, 798 metres above sea level and not far from Tokyo. In 1985, this was achieved and the long-awaited distillery was opened in Shinshu to produce whisky with special Japanese characteristics. Originally founded to produce shochu, the company applied for a whisky licence in 1949. Hombo Shuzo is a traditional producer of alcoholic beverages, founded in 1872. The new bottle is also extraordinarily beautiful, both in its brilliant blue colour and its spectacular design. There are also two imported botanicals, juniper berries and coriander seeds. The nine botanicals included from Kagoshima Prefecture are kumquat, yuzu, green tea, lemon, Hetsuke Daidai (bitter orange), Saigon cinnamon leaves, shell ginger, shiso and ginger. The nose is joined by a beautiful aroma of ginger, shiso and kumquat, while on the palate there are notes of green tea and juniper. ![]() This great gin is characterised by subtle notes of yuzu. Hombo Shuzo is the producer of the famous Mars whisky, and Wa Bi gin is made at the company's Tsunuki distillery in Kagoshima. A fantastic gin from Japan's south! This is the product for the Japanese market, not the export product. The ginger note is present at the beginning, before the citrus flavors of yuzu and kumquat follow. Among others, yuzu, kumquat, green tea and ginger are used. It uses six Japanese botanicals plus eight standard gin additions.The Wa Bi Gin convinces with 9 botanicals from the Kagoshima Prefecture. Castle & Key Harvest Gin : Kentucky's Castle & Key distillery is best known for their bourbon, but they also offer a line of stunning seasonal gins.It works well in bright, floral cocktails and is the perfect gin to use for the prohibition-era classic, the Bee's Knees. Barr Hill : This gin from Caledonia Spirits is notable for its honey-forward profile.This distillery is highly recommended by Death & Co.'s Belanger. They're great high-end products, but for a top-shelf gin, we preferred the uniqueness of Monkey 47. Four Pillars Navy Strength : Four Pillars distillery from Australia produces an excellent line of gin.George Spirits' Botanivore gin is a solid, versatile bottle, but we preferred the uniqueness of their Terroir gin. It's a great gin for refreshing, shaken cocktails, but the cucumber note can feel a bit out of place in certain drinks. Hendrick's : Hendrick's gin is known for using cucumber as a botanical.George Terroir if you want something a bit more understated. Bilberry Black Hearts : This gin from Journeyman Distillery in Michigan came highly recommended by Anders Erickson.There were many bottles that we enjoyed, but just didn't quite make the cut. Narrowing down our list of the best gins was not easy.
